I Had to Do It
Wild dog hunts can be extremely brutal, and watching them is not for the faint-hearted. Still, one has to remember that it's their way of surviving the sometimes-cruel realities of our natural world.
I followed this pack of dogs from the moment the departured the den. They had followed two waterbuck and failed, and then changed the strategy. Two dogs went behind the prey while the main pack was chasing it next to a stream. When the waterbuck jumped over the stream to avoid the dogs, the two that had departed found and forced it back to the stream, where the main pack found and caught it. The waterbuck wasthen dragged out and eaten alive. One of the dogs made a short pause when feeding and gave me a look I'll never forget.
